Illini to open 2015 Big Ten play with Nebraska

Illinois will open its 2015 Big Ten schedule at home against Nebraska and then play three more conference games at home.

The Big Ten Conference released its 2015 conference schedule Monday. The Oct. 3 Nebraska game will be Illinois' first home game against the Cornhuskers since they joined the Big Ten.

Other conference home games on the schedule are Wisconsin, Ohio State and Northwestern in the regular-season finale. The Illini will go on the road to face Iowa, Penn State, Purdue and Minnesota.

Big Ten adding lacrosse * The Big Ten is adding lacrosse as a sport in 2015 and welcoming powerhouse Johns Hopkins as an affiliate member for men's lacrosse only, two moves that could further boost the profile of the conference in the East.

The addition of men's and women's lacrosse will increase the number of league sports to 28. Both the men's and women's lacrosse leagues will include Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers.

Six teams are required to hold a conference championship. Adding Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins as an affiliate member brings the Big Ten to the minimum number for men's lacrosse. The sixth team on the women's side will be Northwestern.

Blaylock charged in fatal crash * Authorities say former NBA All- Star Daron "Mookie" Blaylock has been charged with vehicular homicide in a head-on crash in suburban Atlanta.

Jonesboro (Ga.) Police Chief Franklin Allen said Blaylock, 46, was also charged with driving on a suspended license and failure to maintain his lane in the Friday crash.

Police said Blaylock, who played 13 seasons with New Jersey, Atlanta and Golden State, was driving an SUV that crossed the center line and struck a van. A van passenger, Monica Murphy, 43, died hours later. Her husband survived. Atlanta Medical Center spokeswoman Nicole Gustin said Blaylock was in fair condition Monday. He initially was on life support.

Allen said police are working to determine the cause and that alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor. Blaylock told investigators he blacked out just before the wreck.
