Charter School Brings Back Principal on Interim Basis

Lynne Glickert, the principal whose firing on May 31 created controversy at Grand Center Arts Academy, will come back as interim principal at the charter school.

The Confluence Academies board announced Wednesday that it has agreed to the recommendation by a newly formed parent advisory council to bring Glickert back but only until a permanent replacement is found. The board will conduct a national search for a new principal, although it will consider Glickert if she applies.

The decision follows an uproar from parents and students after Confluence leaders informed Glickert her contract would not be renewed and she would no longer be principal at the school, "citing philosophical differences."

"We've reiterated with Ms. Glickert our concerns and will work more closely with her throughout this interim period to address them," said Sonya Henry, the board chairwoman, in a prepared statement.

Glickert, a beloved principal who had been with Grand Center Arts Academy in Midtown since 2009, opened its doors in August 2010 for the school's first day. The board had decided to replace her with Louise Losos, who left Clayton High School last year after a Facebook controversy. After the outcry, the board decided Losos would not be principal at Grand Center Arts Academy, but will work for Confluence Academies in a position yet to be determined. Parents had been waiting to hear whether they would offer Glickert the interim position.

"We're thrilled," parent Dianne Gray said.

The outcry about Glickerts' removal caught the Confluence board off guard. …
