Jags' Gabbert leaves with sprained thumb

Jacksonville quarterback Blaine Gabbert left the Jaguars' preseason game against the New York Jets because of a sprained right thumb.

Gabbert, competing with Chad Henne for the starting job, appeared to bang his throwing hand on one of the Jets' defensive players' helmets Saturday night. He was replaced by Henne late in the second quarter, but the Jaguars announced that Gabbert was coming out of the game regardless of the injury.

Before the injury, Gabbert made a good case to wrap up the Jaguars' starting job, going 13 of 16 for 165 yards and a touchdown in the 37-13 loss to New York.

Bills rookie QB Manuel out * Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel will miss the rest of the preseason after hurting his left knee in Friday night's preseason game.

In a statement released by the team Saturday, coach Doug Marrone said the first-round draft pick would have a "minor knee procedure."

Denver DE Wolfe suffers neck injury * Denver defensive end Derek Wolfe sustained a neck injury in the first quarter of a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. The Broncos said Wolfe was being evaluated for a cervical spine injury and had movement in all of his extremities.

Browns' Mingo out of hospital * Browns rookie linebacker Barkevious Mingo has been released from the hospital after bruising his lung in an exhibition game.

Mingo spent two nights in The Cleveland Clinic with the unusual injury. He was hurt on a hit in the first half of Thursday night's game against Detroit.

Chargers' Royal injured * Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal was taken off a practice field in an ambulance after landing hard on his back after making a catch in practice Saturday. The team said he has a bruised lung and was being evaluated for a concussion.

Lions sign McIntosh, Mathis * The Detroit Lions signed outside linebacker Rocky McIntosh and cornerback Rashean Mathis on Saturday. …
