RUNNING IN PLACE

Granted, much of the offensive emphasis has been on the passing game this preseason. Even so, the Rams haven't run the ball nearly as well as they need to. The Rams are averaging only 63 yards a game and 3.0 yards a carry in exhibition play, with no run longer than 17 yards. Coach Jeff Fisher wants to polish up the running game before the real stuff begins.

KICKOFF QUANDARY

The Rams still haven't settled in on a kickoff returner. Isaiah Pead is averaging only 19.8 yards on four returns. Benny Cunningham doesn't look the part you don't normally see human bowling balls returning kicks. But his 34.5-yard average on two returns catches the eye, small sample size or not. Chris Givens (left) remains an option. And there's always Tavon Austin.

LINE DANCING

Some tough cuts remain on the defensive line, with Gerald Rivers, Matt Conrath, and Mason Brodine all hoping to get off the bubble and onto the 53-man roster. Fisher says he's fine, but Chris Long is nicked up injury unknown and may not play tonight. …
