FAMILIAR FACES SHOW UP AT KIDS' EVENTS; Families Can Enjoy Otters at the Zoo, ' Fantasia,' Secret Agent 23 Skidoo; FALL ARTS PREVIEW

Article excerpt

This season, kids will find several shows and exhibits created just for them.

The Magic House celebrates the sports season with the traveling exhibit "Football." Kids can see how science and math are used in the game by testing their throwing skills, trying to match the speed of an NFL running back and learning about the trajectory for kicking a field goal.

Music-loving parents have contemporary and classical choices to share with their children. COCA opens its family series with Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, a hip-hop musician for kids who has performed sets at big-name festivals, including Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. KDHX continues its afternoon Merry Go Round concert series with The Boogers at Off Broadway. The Chicago-area trio will play its punk sounds for a Halloween party. The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra will play the music of Bach, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky when it performs the score of "Fantasia" while the classic Disney film is shown on a big screen at Powell Symphony Hall.

In addition to "Fantasia," familiar characters from TV shows and the movies will visit this fall. Mickey, Minnie and Goofy hit the rink with more than 60 other famous characters in "Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic" at Chaifetz Arena. It may not have been around as long as the Disney gang, but Veggie Tales throws itself a 20- year birthday party with "Veggie Tales Live," a collection of favorite songs and stories from the popular Christian series. And the silly, colorful Wiggles come to Peabody Opera House on Sept. 18.

At the theater, kids can venture to the sea, to the future or into their conscience. In the one-man show "The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer," Tim Watts mixes animation, puppetry and mime to tell the story of a man in mourning who travels to the underworld. In year 2413, when students are raised and taught by androids, a girl finds "The Very Last Green Thing" on earth when she goes on a field trip. Opera Theatre of St. Louis presents this production at the Touhill. Local troupe Piwacket deals with bullying and teaches acceptance with the play "DuckUgly," based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling."

If that bird isn't enough, animal lovers can find more furry and feathered friends. …
