Sideline Volunteer Dies from Fall at Football Game

BELLEVILLE * Frank Antoine, 80, was fatally injured while doing something he loved helping out at a high school football game surrounded by youngsters and old friends.

Antoine, a member of the sideline crew, fell and hit his head as a play drew near in the game between Collinsville High School and Althoff Catholic High School at Lindenwood Stadium on Friday night.

"He kind of got knocked over and fell back and hit his head," said his son, Frank J. Antoine Jr. He died early Saturday at a St. Louis hospital without regaining consciousness.

"It was a big play on the sideline and there were bodies flying around. He must have gotten bumped," said Althoff Principal David Harris.

Antoine had volunteered at least 10 years on the sideline "chain gang," Antoine Jr. said. "He just loved being with his friends and enjoying the moment. He loved life and he enjoyed watching sports. He loved being around the kids."

The senior Antoine was raised in East St. Louis and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. …
