'I'm Not a Parody of the Samples Playing Old Hits.; I'm Still Current, Still Writing.'

The Samples has reached a landmark period 25 years since forming in Boulder, Colo., and, next year, 25 years since the band's debut album, "The Samples." But Sean Kelly, the sole founding member of the band that gave us albums such as "No Room" (1992), "The Last Drag" (1993), "Autopilot" (1994) and "Outpost" (1996) and songs such as "Feel Us Shaking," "When It's Raining" and "Birth of Words," isn't one to get swept away by sentiment.

"I'm not an anniversary person," says Kelly, unaware of the group's accomplishment. "I had no idea time has gone by. Maybe we should do something. Maybe someone should put something together. But it's hard enough to just get people to the shows." He's more interested in looking forward.

"The way I treat this is that what matters is right now," Kelly says.

"I'm not a parody of the Samples playing old hits. I'm still current, still writing. We have a new album coming out this Thanksgiving. I'm not relying on past things, though the past is what propelled it." And while Kelly isn't overly nostalgic about the band's history, he does recall things back then that meant something to him.

"I was really able to get away with some really goofy haircuts," he says. "You look back at yourself being young and idealistic and starry-eyed. You think about the posters on your wall as a high school dropout and see that dreams can really happen if you're focused and stay at something. I had such a passion." Instead of operating with a solid core of longtime players, the Samples' lineup has changed often over the years, a true game of musical chairs. Some of the shuffling came when players had to leave because of family obligations; other times, band members became involved with "drugs and crap. …
