It took several hours after his mother's water broke for Dilan Orbe to be delivered, but the newborn's arrival at 12:35 a.m. Sunday made him the first-born baby in Bergen and Passaic counties in 2012.

"While I was in labor I was hoping he would be born in the new year," his mother, Melida Orbe, 19, of Hackensack said in Spanish. "Now we have a new year, a new son, and a new birthday tradition."

Dilan's due date was Jan. 9, but his mother said her water broke at 6 a.m. Saturday and she knew then that she could be ringing in the New Year with her son. She said she called her doctor, and then spent all morning at home before she headed to Hackensack University Medical Center.

"We may not have gotten the first baby of the year, but we probably have the biggest," said Margaret Calzaretta, nurse manager at the hospital.

Gabino had a due date of Dec. 28, but his mother, Carrington Seymour of West Coxsackie, N.Y., said she thought delivery was a few more days away so she decided to spend the holiday with her fiance in Jersey City. She watched the Times Square ball drop on television, and then she headed to bed. …
