The Giants are peaking at the right time, entering the NFC Championship Game after giving their best performance in handily beating the top-seeded Packers, 37-20. And now they get the next rematch they sought, having lost to the 49ers in November, 27-20. They were 10 yards from tying that game late in the fourth quarter when Justin Smith knocked down an Eli Manning pass headed for the end zone. The Giants shut down Frank Gore (1,211 yards this season) in the first meeting, limiting him to zero yards on six carries -- although he was hurt. But QB Alex Smith (61.3 completion percentage, 3,144 yards, 17 TDs, 5 INTs) has developed into a dangerous signal caller and more than what Justin Tuck in November called "a guy that they're trying to keep out of position of having to win a football game." Smith torched the Saints for 299 yards and three touchdowns Saturday in the Niners' 36-32 victory. …
