Flexible Nets Shouldn't Bend for Lopez

It was no surprise Wednesday when the deadline to extend the contract of Brook Lopez came and went, and the Nets did nothing.

It's not that they don't want Lopez. They just don't want him if it keeps them from getting Dwight Howard.

"I just think at the time, the flexibility, the injury, I'd rather look at doing it this summer," Nets general manger Billy King said.

King said he considered extending Lopez. But flexibility is the key word.

If the Nets were to extend Lopez now, the immediate impact on their cap space would limit their options.

By waiting to re-up Lopez, the Nets have more space to go after someone such as Howard if he gets to free agency. By waiting, the Nets could have Lopez and Howard on their roster next season.

The Nets also get to see how Lopez's injury situation plays out by waiting until this summer, when they will have the opportunity to keep him as a restricted free agent.
