Nets Looking to Capture Giants' Vibe

Avery Johnson is no Giants fan. But there's no question who he'll be rooting for in Super Bowl XLVI.

The coach of the Brooklyn-bound Nets will be pulling for the New York team on Sunday. But he'll be doing more than rooting for the Giants. He's hoping his franchise can draw a little inspiration from their football-playing neighbors.

"It's a great story," Johnson said of the Giants' climb from 7-7 to the Super Bowl. "And I think we're going to be a great story one day."

That day appears to be in the future, although the Nets have found a way to battle through injuries and a brutal schedule -- they've played respectable basketball for most of the young season.

But Tuesday, the Nets got a taste of prosperity as they were in the epicenter of the Giants' success story. The Nets played in Indianapolis -- their hotel was downtown and the Super Bowl hype machine was inescapable.

"It's a great vibe," Johnson said. "And I hope for our team it's the type of vibe that we want, to become a perennial playoff team sometime soon, and have a three-year window, which I call it, to win a championship. …
