Devils Showing Some Fight

Article excerpt

NEWARK - The Devils are showing resiliency, but they might soon start running out of healthy bodies.

They rallied from two two-goal deficits in a 5-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in a hard-hitting game Thursday night at Prudential Center.

Zach Parise scored his second goal of the game with just 2:44 remaining to snap a 3-3 tie and put the Devils ahead for good. Then, David Clarkson added his second of the night into an empty net with 31.6 seconds remaining to seal the win, which put the Devils back in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 59 points.

The Devils rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to tie the game at 3 on Dainius Zubrus' deflection goal 6:11 into the third period.

The two points came at a price, though, as rookie defenseman Adam Larsson left the game with what the team is calling a "bruised lower back" after taking a hard hit from Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban with 5:58 remaining in the third period.

Devils coach Pete DeBoer still said the victory was "pretty sweet."

"From what I understand it looks like a bruise, so that's a good sign," DeBoer said.

DeBoer said he wouldn't know until today whether Larsson, the fourth overall pick in last June's draft, would be available for the team's games this weekend against Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

The Devils are missing defenseman Henrik Tallinder (blood clot in left leg) and centers Travis Zajac (sore left Achilles' tendon) and Adam Henrique (groin strain). Although Larsson is only 19, he plays significant minutes on a thin Devils' defense.

"Hopefully, he's OK for this weekend because we need him," Parise said.

Larsson was carrying the puck up ice and had just crossed the Montreal blue line when Subban connected with his right shoulder and hip on a hit that sent Larsson flying into the left wing boards back- first with 5:58 remaining in the third period and the game tied at 3. …
