Speedy Malone Is Cut above Rest

NEW YORK - Before he's finished with his career, Pascack Valley's Ben Malone will have competed in many races and probably will have won most of them. But it's doubtful he'll ever run in a stranger race than Friday's New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

Malone won the 1,000-meters race in an astounding 2:23.56, which trails only two-time NCAA champion Robby Andrews' national record time of 2:22.43 set three years ago.

But Malone crossed the finish line third.

Zavon Watkins of Liverpool, N.Y., and Ned Willig of Phoenixville, Pa., were the first runners to finish, but they were among four runners disqualified for cutting in off of their outside staggered position a turn too soon.

"It's a shame it happened," said Malone, who ran the distance faster than Alan Webb did the year he broke the 4-minute mile in high school. "I would have loved to run against them for the full distance, because I think we all might have run faster. …
