IT DIDN'T take long for the public discourse on marriage equality to descend to the sandbox. "Numbnuts" pretty much says it all.

That is what Governor Christie called Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, D-Mercer, after the openly gay legislator suggested that Christie "would have found allies" with former Govs. Lester Maddox of Georgia and George Wallace of Alabama.

Gusciora was, in turn, reacting to Christie's earlier comments that civil rights activists in the South would have preferred a public referendum on racial equality rather than fighting and dying in the streets. Christie's insensitive remarks were used to defend his call for a public referendum on marriage equality in New Jersey. The governor said he would veto a marriage equality bill if it passes the Legislature and would rather the issue was put up for a statewide vote.

The uproar after Christie's initial statement was loud: To suggest blacks in the South could have achieved racial equality through a voter referendum was both insulting and historically inaccurate. …
