EMERSON - Work began this week to remediate lingering drainage issues at Hillman Field on High Street.

Crews started drilling on the field Friday, one week after ini[not]tially planned. Early last week, a team from AquaTurf Irrigation LLC visited the field and determined it was too wet to hold the heavy equipment required to do the job."It should take three to four days to finish the work," Councilman Scott Rivers said.

Last month, the Borough Council awarded a $20,683 contract to AquaTurf of Orange, Conn., to make various drainage and rainwater runoff improvements at the athletic field.

In 2011, several youth sports games and practices were either postponed or canceled after heavy rains left the field filled with puddles.

Drainage issues at the field date to at least 2008. Since then, the borough has spent about $212,000 on the field, including money from a $73,000 match[not]ing grant from the Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund.At one point, officials dis[not]cussed installing artificial turf as a solution. …
