The coaches in Monday night's national final, Kentucky's John Calipari and Kansas' Bill Self, also were in the same place last September. They appeared at Rutgers as part of a basketball clinic to benefit In Brayden's Eyes, The Brayden Carr Foundation. That is a charitable organization founded by former Rutgers assistant coach Jim Carr in honor of his son, Brayden, who died at 2 years old last May because of a complication from a rare condition that caused chronic seizures.

Carr left Rutgers last week to join the Rhode Island staff under new coach Danny Hurley.

"I would do anything that I possibly could to help a situation like that," Self said Sunday. "Jim and I still stay in touch. As a matter of fact, he texted me [Saturday]. It was cool to be a part of that. It was a fantastic clinic, as good a clinic you can go to as far as the type of people that spoke there. …
