Rangers Grab Lunch Pails to Go to Work

NEW YORK - Terming tonight's Game 5 between the Rangers and Senators at Madison Square Garden pivotal with their Eastern Conference quarterfinal tied at two games apiece actually fails to properly convey its importance.

Prior to this year, the Rangers had been tied 2-2 in a best-of- seven series 22 times in their history. The Game 5 winner went on to win the series 20 times (91 percent).

Overall in NHL history, teams winning Game 5 of a best-of-seven series tied at 2 have gone on to win 173 of 216 times (80 percent), according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"It's 2-2, we just have to go out and do it now and play the right way," Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. "I wouldn't say we're in control. It's pretty open. We're determined to win this."

The Rangers, who have not trailed in regulation this series but have lost Games 2 and 4 in overtime to run their playoff overtime losing streak to seven games, dating to 2007, had a great chance to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. But after taking a two-goal lead just 6:10 in Wednesday's Game 4, the Rangers wound up losing, 3-2, on Kyle Turris' goal at 2:42 of overtime.

With rookie Carl Hagelin and his ability to pursue pucks serving the final game of a three-game suspension after his high hit left Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson concussed in Game 2, coach John Tortorella separated his top two players, center Brad Richards and right wing Marian Gaborik, during Friday's practice at the Garden.

Richards skated between Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan while Gaborik was reunited with center Derek Stepan and Artem Anisimov, trios that were used in the third period Wednesday.

But it's not lineup tweaks that will most benefit the Rangers. It's playing a more consistently physical and aggressive game.

In other words, the style that shot them to the top of the Eastern Conference standings during the regular season. …
