CARLSTADT -- An outpouring of sympathy and charitable gifts six years ago when Michael A. Schwarz was killed in Iraq is keeping the fallen Marine's memory alive.

The $500 Michael A. Schwarz Memorial Scholarship will be awarded next month to a Carlstadt high school senior for the sixth year -- a gift that now accrues funds in an interest-bearing account.

"We do ask for donations but it's the interest that has carried us through," said Robert Moore, the borough's fire marshal.

A few churches and charitable organizations make donations annually but the fund has been self-sufficient, he said.

The scholarship is awarded by the fire department's Engine Company Two, the emergency unit Schwarz served in before joining the military.

Financed by funds donated to the family, Pamela Schwarz, his mother, said she wanted to create a lasting tribute.

"It was a way of helping others and to remember my son," Schwarz said. "It's a way to establish something that gives back to the community. …
