Rally in 10th Cut Short

Article excerpt

NEW YORK - The chance was there, just waiting for Jason Bay.

He stepped to the plate in the 10th inning with runners on second and third, one out and the Mets trailing by a run.

The left fielder has struggled in his two-plus seasons in New York, but had an opportunity to wipe away a deficit, the team's mini- slump and yet another rough start with one swing.

But he struck out swinging before Lucas Duda flew out.

Hector Sanchez lined a 10th-inning single off closer Frank Francisco to score Melky Cabrera as the San Francisco Giants beat the Mets, 4-3, Friday night at Citi Field to open a four-game series.

"I think I made a descent pitch and he got a soft base hit," Francisco said. "The only thing I can control is for me to throw the ball."

He added: "I missed my spots. He didn't hit the ball hard. But still ... I should have made a better pitch."

The Mets (7-6) lost their third straight and their fourth in five games.

But the Mets fell behind, 3-0, in the third, only to tie the game at 3 in the ninth on a Josh Thole RBI single that scored Bay and moved Kirk Nieuwenhuis to third with one out. They had the chance to win it with Mike Baxter up. He hit the ball to first, but Nieuwenhuis failed to reach home safely, making the second out on a fielder's choice. Ruben Tejada struck out swinging to end the inning.

And, the Giants scored the winning run in the 10th.

Cabrera walked to lead off, then stole second base with one out. Gregor Blanco flew out for the second out, but Francisco intentionally walked Nate Schierholtz before Sanchez delivered a single to score Cabrera with the go-ahead run. …
