BOSTON - As generations of Red Sox players milled about the field on Fenway Park's 100th anniversary, a healthy contingent of gray- clad Yankees watched the splendid pregame ceremonies from their dugout.

And when the Yankees emerged in 1912-style uniforms, they came out slugging.

Five home runs off Boston starter Clay Buchholz - two by Eric Chavez and one history-making shot by Alex Rodriguez - rained on the Red Sox' festivities.

"It was a great day. I'm really glad we were a part of it. I loved it," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, whose club scored a 6- 2 victory on a summery Friday afternoon - one Red Sox Nation will likely remember up until the game's first at-bat.

A-Rod's fifth-inning homer sailed over the Green Monster and vaulted him into sole possession of fifth place on baseball's all- time list with No. 631, passing his former Seattle Mariners teammate, Ken Griffey Jr.

"We have much bigger goals around here than chasing names or chasing history," A-Rod said.

Buchholz's first pitch arrived 100 years ago to the hour of Fenway's very first game, when the Red Sox defeated the Highlanders (renamed the Yankees a year later), 7-6, in 11 innings.

And both clubs were clad in uniforms of the day - the Sox in white with plain white caps, the Yanks in solid gray with the early version interlocking NY and gray caps.

Those 1912 Red Sox would go on to win the World Series, while the Yankees' forebears would lose 102 games. …
