Leonia Ends Its Drought in Style

Saturday was a pretty special day in the history of the Leonia softball program. And it was a long time coming.

Not only did the Lions make their first appearance in the Bergen County tournament since 1997, they also won their play-in game over Hasbrouck Heights, 3-1. Not bad for a team that was the 35th and final seed.

"It was an exciting time. It's probably the best game we played all year," Leonia coach Anthony Servis said. "We were pumped for the win and pumped that we're playing our best softball at the right time."

As good as Saturday's win was, it was the second-best thing that happened to Servis last week. His wife gave birth to the couple's first child, a son named Benjamin Anthony, on Tuesday. Needless to say, Servis didn't get much sleep in the nights leading up to the big game.

Leonia earned its way into the tournament by virtue of a 6-5 record at the cutoff date. The Lions could have ended the tourney streak last season. They finished 14-6, but former coach Erich Breyer elected to skip the tournament - and an expected loss - to focus on winning the league title, which they did. …
