River City Extension, "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Your Anger" (XOXO) *** 1/2 To test one's palate on "Top Chef," contestants have to taste a soup while blindfolded and identify as many ingredients as possible. The good ones can name five or six.

Sometimes I feel like I can do the same with my ears when the right album comes along. Take River City Extension's latest album "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Your Anger." Only four songs in, I heard folk, alt-country, a little bit of rock and a touch of baroque. There's probably more -- maybe a lot more -- but my palate only goes so far.

River City Extension is an eight-piece band from Toms River , led by singer-songwriter-guitarist Joseph Michelini. There are shades of Wilco, Okkervil River, Bright Eyes, Townes Van Zandt and others all over their work, one of the best albums so far this year.

This is a band that employs banjos on one song, cellos on another. I hear the trumpet at the beginning of "If You Need Me Back in Brooklyn" and I think of Belle and Sebastian. …
