North 1, Groups 1 & 4 and Non-Public B at Randolph; North 1, Groups 2 & 3 at Mahwah; North 2, Group 1 at Ridge H.S., Bernards; North 2, Group 2 at South Plainfield, Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m.

BOYS

North 1, Group 1

Teams to watch: Hasbrouck Heights tries to win its second straight title but will get a huge test from Mountain Lakes, which never has won a North 1 title. Boonton and Emerson also are in the mix, but Heights may have overwhelming, field-event strength.

Returning champion: Steven Lewandowski, Mountain Lakes (1,600 and 3,200). David Njoku, Cedar Grove won North 2, Group 1 HJ.

Events to watch: Lewandowski and Domenic D'Agostino of Wallington probably are the best two small-school distance runners in the state and they will match up in the 1,600 and 3,200. Anthony Seidel of Hasbrouck Heights, Ben Schumacher of Cedar Grove and Kyle Youmans of Leonia are among the state's top javelin throwers.

North 1, Group 2

Teams to watch: Morris Hills is a huge favorite to retain its Group 2 title and perhaps win the state group meet as well. Ramsey, River Dell and Pascack Hills will battle for second.

Returning champions: Chris Eltringham, Ramsey (800); Travis Ellis, Morris Hills (1,600 and 3,200); Kevin Costabel, Newton (HJ).

Events to watch: Eltringham and Ellis are joined by Lenape Valley's Danny Murnane in the 800 and 1,600. Fernando Almonte of Lodi, Brian Psota of Ramsey and Michael Demby of Morris Hills meet in the 110 hurdles, and the aptly named Greg Leeper of Morris Hills and teammate Adrian Samsel of Morris Hills face Brian Pepper of Ramsey in the triple jump.

North 1, Group 3

Teams to watch: Old Tappan looks to win its first sectional title since 1989 and should have little trouble holding off Demarest, with Pascack Valley, Indian Hills and Teaneck right behind.

Returning champions: Devin Fuller, Old Tappan (200); Ben Malone, Pascack Valley (800); Mark Van Teyens, West Milford (110 HH); Brandon Gregory, Old Tappan (400 IH); Jamal Williams, Teaneck (LJ). James Siglin, Vernon won North 1, Group 4 PV.

Events to watch: Ben Davis of Old Tappan and Patrick Benson of Wayne Valley have a showdown at 100 and 200, with Fuller a real factor in the latter event. Teaneck's Damien Elliot faces Calvin Knox of Indian Hills and Fuller in what should be a very fast 400. Van Teyens defends against a vastly improved Rob Gebhard of Northern Highlands in the 110 hurdles and Andrew Trumbetti of Demarest faces Grant Sanchez of Montville in the shot.

North 1, Group 4

Teams to watch: The North 1 battle of the day could be the showdown between Ridgewood and West Orange, with Hackensack, Randolph, Montclair and Passaic Tech playing supporting roles.

Returning champions: Dexter Valley, West Orange (100 and 400); Jared Mason, West Orange (800); Christian Gomez, Memorial (JT); Jabari Butler, Passaic Tech (HJ); Stephaun Marshall, Montclair (LJ); Evan Bartlik, Ridgewood (TJ). …
