Mets Right Not to Mess with Dickey's Rest

Back in the dark ages of television reception - the 1980s - we used to keep an antenna in our living room. Like most families in our neighborhood, we relied on that set of rabbit ears to improve picture quality.

It was an inexact science. You rotated a dial. You tweaked the angle of those twin antennas. You hoped your favorite show was on one of the channels amenable to your antenna.

But once the picture looked somewhat crisp, you stopped immediately. You did not mess with it. Most families had a perfectionist. That perfectionist inevitably tinkered and made things worse.

A few days ago, watching R.A. Dickey field questions about starting on three days' rest, I could not help but think about those old television antennas and a Yankee pitcher named Joba Chamberlain.

Dickey has become one of the best stories in baseball. The Mets pitcher is 11-1. He has thrown back-to-back one-hitters. At 37, he has inexplicably arrived at his peak.
