Wagner Looking for Rare Triple

Article excerpt

Hillsborough's Kristina Wagner shoots for an unprecedented third consecutive title at the ninth New Jersey Women's Public Links Championship.

Wagner, 21, is among 57 golfers competing in today's 18-hole shotgun event that starts at 8:30 a.m. at Knob Hill Golf Club in Manalapan. The collegian is the only two-time winner.

Wagner, who plays out of Mattawang, won the 2010 title at Valley Brook in River Vale by four strokes. She won last year's New Jersey State Golf Association crown at Francis Byrne in West Orange on the first playoff hole with a par.

Wagner's list of challengers should include Noelle Maertz of Hyatt Hills, who earned first team All-State this season for Mother Seton Regional High School, Joy Passalacqua of Pinch Brook, who last year tied for third, and Cathleen Marquis of Pinch Brook, who last year placed fifth.

Others expected to fare well include Joanna Kim of Neshanic Valley, Christine Kim of Pinch Brook and Christie Pasternick of Princeton.

Jane Kuhfuss of Rolling Greens returns, one year after her 6- over 78 lifted her into the playoff with Wagner.

Nancy Vasile of Paramus, the two-time reigning Bergen County Women's Pre-Senior titlist, leads the local cast. Vasile was sixth in 2010 and 24th last year.

Among the other locals are Madeleine Herbert of Darlington, who last year tied for 29th, and Jane Donlan of Darlington.

State Public Links qualifier: Tom Crawford of Darlington, Merv Smith of Neshanic Valley and Andre Bolukbas of Rockleigh lead the roster of locals competing at today's State Public Links qualifier at Charleston Springs in Millstone.

Crawford, a Glen Rock resident, finished sixth last year. Smith, a Mahwah resident, tied for seventh and Bolukbas, a Cresskill resident, tied for 12th.

The local lineup also includes Bobby Erianne of Preakness Valley, runner-up at last week's Passaic County Amateur, Chris Giunta of Preakness Valley, Hyung Mo Kim and Michael Pansini of Valley Brook, Jin Jeon of Paramus and Edwin Scherer of Darlington. …
