ROCHELLE PARK - There was a Christmas-in-July spirit in the air Tuesday as members of a Rotary Club handed out gifts, sang and provided refreshments at the Bristol Manor Nursing Home.

About 80 residents, most of them senior citizens, got a surprise when they were serenaded with Christmas carols by area merchants and business leaders who took time off to play Santa.

The festive celebration, dubbed Christmas in July, was the first given by the mid-Bergen Rotary Club, one of a growing number of community-oriented programs sponsored by the service organization.

"Everybody gives out gifts [to nursing home residents] during the holidays, said Carl Hassett, the owner of a Rutherford upholstery business, dressed in a red Santa outfit. "The rest of the time, [the residents] are just in a nursing home. ...We wanted to come in and cheer them up and say, 'Hey, we actually care about you.' "
