Mara Bats Away Barb by Cowboys Owner

ALBANY, N.Y. - John Mara clearly was joking, but that didn't stop the co-owner and team president of the Giants from taking verbal shots - playful or not -- at Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Tim Tebow and the Jets on Wednesday.

With a bandage on his forehead above his right eye, Mara had just finished lunch in the University at Albany dining hall when he told a group of reporters with a chuckle: "You should see what Jerry Jones looks like."

That retort was in response to Jones previously telling a pep rally of more than 5,000 fans at Cowboys camp his team was planning on beating "the New York Giants' [butts]."

Mara followed up his cafeteria humor with a radio interview during which, after hearing audio of Jones' remark, the Giants' frontman delivered a jab at his MetLife Stadium co-habitants and their circus-like camp atmosphere in Cortland, N.Y.

"That's the first time I heard [Jones' remark] ... we'll show up," Mara said with a laugh. "I've been so caught up in the Tebow coverage I haven't had time for anything else."

Mara was the only one in the Giants' organization willing to partake in any back-and-forth festivities Wednesday, considering the players - even those who you would expect to have something to say - refused to engage the Cowboys' owner.

"Because talk is cheap," defensive end Justin Tuck said. "Play the game."

Mara continues to have fun with the relative anonymity the Giants are experiencing on campus here compared to the overwhelming attention being paid to the Jets.

On the second day of camp, Mara walked past a contingent of reporters - larger than the previous day - and quipped: "I can't believe so many of you are here. Tebow isn't here."

Back in March at the NFL meetings, the night before Tebow's introductory news conference in Florham Park, Mara was asked if New York is big enough for the defending Super Bowl champions and Tebow. …
