Hopeful Sabathia Goes Back to the Dl

Article excerpt

TORONTO - Despite a "low level of concern" among Yankees officials for CC Sabathia's aching pitching elbow, the condition was serious enough to land the lefty ace on the disabled list.

That was the alarming addendum to Saturday afternoon's tidy 5-2 victory against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, where Ivan Nova rediscovered his signature slider and racked up 10 strikeouts.

After winning their fourth straight game, the Yankees hope they've only lost Sabathia for two starts. The club is expected to add veteran right-hander Derek Lowe by Monday, though he's presently considered a bullpen option.

"As far as concern, it's pretty low," Joe Girardi said of Sabathia after a prolonged postgame period when the manager's office door was closed.

Sabathia (12-3, 3.56) will be examined Monday in New York. No further tests are planned, though Sabathia could receive a cortisone shot to combat elbow inflammation.

Through a club spokesman, Sabathia deferred comment. He'll speak to the media today.

But the stiffness returned Friday and Sabathia threw on flat ground instead of doing his normal between-starts bullpen session.

"We've been talking about it all day," Girardi said of whether to skip Sabathia a turn or place him on the disabled list. "[The pain] is not any worse than it was after the first [time]. But our concern was that it didn't go away."

Even with the discomfort, Sabathia told Girardi he could make his scheduled start Monday night. …
