Same Old Song from Jet 'O'

Article excerpt

EAST RUTHERFORD - Adding insults to injuries. That pretty much summed up the Jets' 17-12 loss to Carolina on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

The insults came from the home fans, who booed loudly when the Jets settled for a 22-yard Nick Folk field goal after a Carolina turnover gave them the ball at the Panthers' 12-yard line in the second quarter. They also voiced their displeasure when the Jets ran only two safe plays in the final 1:11 of the half despite having the ball at their own 25 with two timeouts remaining.

Now the Jets' starting offense likely will not score a touchdown in the preseason. They managed only three field goals with Mark Sanchez before he was relieved by Tim Tebow in the third quarter. Coach Rex Ryan reiterated after the game that Sanchez and backup quarterback Tebow will not play Thursday in the preseason finale at Philadelphia.

In 15 possessions with Sanchez at the helm this summer, the Jets have scored nine points. Tebow played one series with most of the starters, but he, too, could manage only a field goal. According to NBC, the Jets are the first team since the 1977 Atlanta Falcons to not score a TD in their first three preseason games.

That was the last year of the 14-game NFL regular season, so the Falcons had three more preseason games to get it right. Not so for the Jets.

But as has been his mantra this month, Ryan said afterward he isn't worried.

"There's work to be done, clearly," Ryan said of the offense, "but I think we'll get things turned" by the regular-season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 9.

The injuries began on the offense's first play from scrimmage, when tight end Dustin Keller came up limping after a 24-yard reception to the 50. He left with a hamstring injury and didn't return. Inside linebacker David Harris left with an ankle problem later in the first period and also didn't come back. Ryan said he is "hoping" neither injury is serious. He said he doesn't believe Harris fractured his ankle.

Reserve tight end Josh Baker was hit hard by Carolina's Josh Norman while trying to make a catch in the end zone in the second quarter, and he suffered a right knee injury that looked to be severe. …
