Giants' Williams Seeks Snaps

EAST RUTHERFORD - Jacquian Williams was not concerned this summer with losing his job.

That was last season when the sixth-round pick from South Florida waited out the final cuts as if his future with the Giants and in the NFL hung in the balance.

Sidelined for much of this preseason with a nagging hip injury, even as the rest of a suddenly-deep group of linebackers flashed talent across the board, Williams never believed he would end up as the odd man out. The longer he spent out of pads, the more he worried about just how much playing time his teammates would be earning at his expense.

"To be honest, who wouldn't be kinda worried especially when you can't do anything about it?" Williams asked rhetorically earlier this week. "But, you know, I can't feel bad about it and tell myself, 'I'm not going to play,' because that would be bad for me and this team.

"I kept my head up the whole time. I was confident I would have opportunities to play somewhere and make a role for myself here."

Williams' rare combination of speed and power helped him emerge during his rookie season as one of the most unsung contributors on special teams and defensively where his presence at linebacker often is overlooked because of the experienced talent around him.

"I know if we need a play, I can always look to Jacquian to make it happen," said Michael Boley, who likely will reclaim his starting spot on the weak side with Keith Rivers (hamstring) listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against Greg Schiano's Bucs.

As Williams continues to work his way back to full strength, Tom Coughlin said the Giants are starting "to see the natural instinctive reactions" that showed up at key moments over the latter part of his impressive rookie campaign.

"They are there with a guy that practices every day and knows what he's doing and sees the play and sees the special teams' responsibilities and reacts to it," Coughlin said of Williams, 24. …
