Suspect Loses Bid to Cut Bail in 2011 Killing

Article excerpt

In a bizarre encounter a few months before the body of a Teaneck man was found in his burned home, Sui Kam "Tony" Tung went to the house and confronted his estranged wife's lover, demanding to be shown the bedroom where they had sex, a prosecutor said at a court hearing on Thursday.

Robert Cantor let Tung, of New York City, into his Elm Avenue home, taking him to a bedroom in the basement, according to the prosecutor.

That was the bedroom where investigators found Cantor's bullet- riddled body on March 6, 2011, and where they believe the fire started, Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Wayne Mello said on Thursday at a bail hearing in Superior Court in Hackensack.

"That drips motive," Mello said, revealing new details about the killing in arguing against a request to lower Tung's $3 million bail. A judge rejected the request, deeming Tung a flight risk.

Immediately after the killing, Tung -- a computer repair expert - wiped his computers clean by erasing the hard drive, Mello said.

Thursday's hearing was the first time prosecutors have laid out part of their case in a murder that had remained unsolved for more than a year and which the defense claims is based entirely on circumstantial evidence.

Mello, however, described Tung as a flight risk with no ties to New Jersey, whose brother is a convicted felon with reputed ties to Chinese gangs.

Authorities said Cantor, 59, was having an affair with Tung's wife, who was in the process of getting a divorce. Cantor, too, was estranged from his wife at the time and was in the middle of a divorce, authorities said. …
