After seeing a sick friend at a birthday party in 2009 who was going through chemotherapy, Mindy Goldstein decided to do something to cheer her up.

The Closter resident went to a local bead store, picked out some bright colors and made a pair of earrings. They would be just the thing to brighten up her friend's appearance, Goldstein thought. From that small gesture of friendship, the seed of Mindy Gold Designs was planted.

Goldstein liked the intricate process of making jewelry, so much so that she started making earrings for her daughters Amanda, now a seventh-grader, and Jackie, a fifth-grader. They wore them to school and the girls' friends were clamoring to get their own.

"They're very good critics and their own little fashionistas," Goldstein said. "They'll wear my new designs and get the buzz going."

After seeing Goldstein's earring designs, friend and entrepreneur Lisa Monfried suggested she turn it into an actual business instead of just a hobby. Goldstein's delicate, dangling children's earrings, made of brightly colored beads that incorporate hearts and peace signs, look age-appropriate while letting girls feel grown-up.

Monfried, a Norwood resident and owner of Lemon, a children's clothing line, helped introduce Goldstein to North Jersey boutiques that could potentially carry her line of earrings for little girls.

"She created a need for a product that was not available to young girls," Monfried said. "She had her finger on the pulse. There was no one else out there making such beautiful things for little girls."

After Mindy Gold Designs started taking off in children's boutiques, Goldstein in 2011 decided to dabble in adult jewelry. …
