Nhl Deal May Be Closer Than You Think

On the surface, it looks like another bad week in the NHL owners' lockout is in the books.

The league canceled an additional week of its 2012-13 schedule Friday, wiping out games through Nov. 1. That announcement came a day after the NHL quickly rejected three proposals the players made during a meeting in Toronto.

Despite the rhetoric that came from both sides that day, however, the week was not nearly as bad as it might appear.

First of all, after more than a month without any discussion of the biggest issue of how to split the hockey-related revenue pie, each side made new proposals in the past four days. And the proposals from both included the idea of splitting HRR 50-50.

They just have different opinions on how to get there. The NHL wants an immediate cut to 50-50. The three player proposals, for the most part, got there incrementally.

The other major obstacle is that the players want all contracts signed under the previous collective bargaining agreement honored in full. …
