Parents and teachers know how quickly kids can lose momentum at school. A few days off are often at least a few steps back. Here are some ways they can keep those brains working -- and pass the long hours at home.

* Write a letter. First, parents may have to explain the concept to their kids, but once they grasp the idea of paper and pen, envelope and stamp, have your kids write letters to family or friends. It will help with writing and language skills, as well as handwriting -- something rarely focused on these days.

* Play school with younger children. It's easy enough to set up a little math worksheet, or have them write out the alphabet or spelling words. Older siblings can act as teachers.

* Build and create. Exercise both sides of the brain. Make cities with blocks or LEGOs, or work on a detailed picture together. …
