Some in Little Ferry Still Await Power, Heat

LITTLE FERRY -- The lights went on in Ramzi Oueslati's apartment for the first time in more than two weeks Wednesday, but there was no heat or hot water, so he planned to spend yet another night at a friend's home with his wife and their newborn baby girl.

He was more fortunate than some other residents of the Williamstowne Manor apartment complex, where three of five buildings remained without power 16 days after superstorm Sandy. Residents have been waiting for some boilers and electrical panels, located in basements and damaged by flooding during the storm, to be repaired by contractors.

They were among a small number of North Jersey residents without electricity or heat Wednesday, days after utility companies said they had restored power to all buildings and homes that were able to receive it. Officials with the Public Service Electric and Gas Co. said power would be restored to each building at Williamstowne Manor as the complex completes electrical repairs.

Joan Villone, the manager of Williamstowne Manor and the nearby Liberty Bell Village apartments, said repairs have not yet been completed at the two complexes because the damage was so extensive. She said plumbers are still waiting for boiler parts, which are in short supply because of the storm. She said electricians will work through the weekend to make repairs.

At Williamstowne Manor, most residents have been living with friends or in hotels for the past couple of weeks. However, one man, Joseph Swetra, said he stayed in his second-floor apartment until Wednesday, when he said he decided to move to a hotel because of the cold.

"I can't take it anymore," Swetra said.

Villone said 11 of the 12 buildings at the 232-unit Liberty Bell Village have power, but four remain without heat. She said two buildings at Williamstowne Manor, which has 92 units, are expected to have heat, along with power, by today. …
