When you think of settings for romantic dining, Rutherford may not be tops on your list. But it is for Open Table, which last week named Cafe Matisse to the restaurant reservations website's list of "Top 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in the U.S." for 2013.

Dominated by dining rooms in Hawaii and California, the list is based on votes from Open Table users. Cafe Matisse is one of only two New Jersey restaurants named -- the other is Peter Shields in Cape May.

Cafe Matisse, which is housed in an old firehouse, and boasts a dining room decorated in the vibrant colors of its artist namesake, Henri Matisse, was awarded a rare 4 stars by The Record in 2008.

The French impressionist and romance were both inspirations for the restaurant, said Larry Falcone, Cafe Matisse's general manager since it opened 24 years ago. "[Chef Peter Loria's] food is like the painter's palette and we wanted to create a place for people to enjoy intimate dinners," he said.

The restaurant has been the scene of about 60 marriage proposals and 30 small weddings, said Falcone. …
