WEST MILFORD -- DePaul is the new king of Passaic County wrestling, and much to its delight, it knocked the previous ruler off its throne to get there.

Behind five individual champions, a runner-up and four others who placed in the top five, DePaul earned its first Passaic County wrestling tournament title since before anyone in its lineup was born with a 213-201 1/2 victory over two-time defending county champion Wayne Valley on Saturday at West Milford.

Will Kui (106), David McFadden (126), Spencer Carey (138), Nick Carey (160) and Nick DePalma (182) all collected gold for the Spartans, propelling DePaul over its crosstown rival after a back- and-fourth day in which both teams held a lead at one point.

"We've been working to get this for a long time," DePaul coach Keith Karsen said. "It's nice knocking off the kingpins."

It's the Spartans' first county championship since 1987 and the second in program history. The fact they earned it by beating the Indians, who had won three of the last four county titles, made the triumph that much sweeter.

"All week long all the talk was about Valley," said McFadden, a returning state runner-up who won his second title with three pins, including a cradle on previously undefeated Mo Farhan of Clifton in the finals. "To beat Valley this year, coming from nothing, I think this is the start of a new era."

Hawthorne senior Ethan Ramos was named Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning his third straight county gold with a clinical run through the 170-pound bracket, which included two pins and a technical-fall victory in the final. …
