Panthers Girls Use Long Range to Beat Cutters

FAIR LAWN -- Glen Rock had a distinct height disadvantage against Fair Lawn. That was obvious as soon as both teams took the court Saturday afternoon at Bennett Gym.

But the 18th seeded Panthers did a marvelous job picking apart the No. 15 Cutters from long range, neutralizing the Fair Lawn inside game en route to a 63-55 victory in the opening round of the Bergen County girls basketball tournament.

"That was basketball by committee," said Glen Rock coach David Mosconi, whose team faces No. 2 Northern Highlands in Saturday's Round of 16. "We asked the little girls to play big and the big girls to play little."

And no one on either team did a better job than Glen Rock (14-2) senior guard Sophie Lederer. She showed why she's a serious candidate for The Record Player of the Year honor, setting the tone on offense while scoring a game-high 29 points.

Lederer hit three three-point field goals, scored 12 points from the free throw line and did a masterful job moving the ball against a Fair Lawn team with the reputation for being strong defensively. She's going to Colgate to play soccer, so Lederer appears to be making the most of her basketball swan song.

"An unbelievable player," said Fair Lawn coach Chris Lovermi.

"She puts the team on her shoulders and carries us most of the time," Mosconi said.

It was a tight game heading into the final minutes of the first half as both teams shifted back and forth between good and bad stretches. Fair Lawn (12-5) was getting an outstanding effort from sophomore forward Alexandria Kerr (17 points, 15 rebounds) but couldn't seem to press the advantage around the basket for any sustained period. …
