Mahwah Police Accuse Driver of Stealing Car after He Sold It

Article excerpt

MAHWAH -- An Orange man has been arrested for allegedly selling a car on Craigslist, then stealing it back to resell it.

Reynold Joseph, 40, was stopped about 10:40 a.m. Wednesday by Officer David Vega for driving a vehicle with tinted windows, authorities said. When Vega ran the Pontiac G6's license plate, it came back as "not on file," Chief James Batelli said in a news release Thursday.

Joseph told Vega the license plate was a dealer plate and that he worked for a New Jersey dealer, police said. He said he had just purchased the car from someone off Craigslist and was taking it home, they said. He produced a title, in an effort to show he was the owner, but Vega ran the vehicle identification number and learned that the Pontiac was reported stolen in Nassau County, N.Y., Batelli said.

Vega also looked up Joseph's driver's license and found it was suspended in New York and New Jersey, authorities said.

Joseph was arrested. While searching his car, police said they found burglary tools and master keys for Toyota Camrys and Acuras. …
