Girl Scouts Keeping Book Drive Alive

Collecting books at a rate of 1,000 a day, the Saddle Brook Girl Scouts have gathered 17,428 for the Big Book Drive, with more donations pouring in daily.

The drive, an effort of the Paterson library and The Record and Herald News to collect donated books for Paterson children to take home, ended Sunday. But the Girl Scouts will keep their campaign going through the end of the month.

The troop's goal was to collect 10,000 books, but they quickly surpassed it with support from the Saddle Brook mayor and local businesses, as well as help from libraries in Garfield, Lodi, Paramus, Saddle Brook and Washington Township and schools in Emerson and North Haledon.

Scout leader Jennifer Miller said that large donations have also come from sister Girl Scout troops in neighboring towns. Scouts from St. Anne School in Fair Lawn recently delivered more than 1,000 books, and Miller said that they are still awaiting deliveries from several troops in Paramus.

Donations also continue to pour into the drop boxes set up near businesses in Saddle Brook. …
