So right on cue this week, another group of coaches and athletic directors has broached the idea of playing down to public state champions in football.

No surprise. You can set your watch by how regularly one of the most debated subjects in New Jersey high school sports comes up in front of the NJSIAA.

And this latest idea, drawn up by coaches and ADs from the Big North and presented at the annual convention of directors in Atlantic City by River Dell AD Denis Nelson, appears to address many of the issues that have sunk many of the plans that came before.

The tentative plan calls for the season to start a week earlier, but end on time in the first week of December. It maintains Thanksgiving Day games without trying to shoehorn three games into two weeks, which results in two extra games for only the very best teams.

It's a sound plan that addresses a glaring weakness in the state, the crowning of 24 official champions in football.

But it also highlights a problem the NJSIAA has not been able to get a handle on in recent years: perception. …
