Perhaps you've seen them lying around the gym. They're small, but menacing. They're called kettlebells, and they are your fitness friend.

Kettlebell training is gaining popularity because of myriad benefits, including strength, flexibility, mobility and cardio. All that, and you can get a strenuous workout in only about 20 minutes - - the cast iron piece, which looks like a cannonball with a handle attached, is an ideal tool for quick exercises that work various muscle groups at once.

"Kettlebells are the perfect way to exercise," said Fatmah Hussein, a personal trainer and the owner of OOMIE Fitness in Ridgefield Park.

The women-only gym offers yoga, Pilates, kettlebell and kickboxing. Hussein used to offer other weight training classes with dumbbells but found that kettlebells were much more effective.

"You use more than one muscle group, so you burn more calories, lose weight and get stronger," Hussein said.

The intensity of the workouts also has benefits that go beyond the sometimes monotonous gym routine.

Hussein said that her kettlebell classes are never more than 45 minutes, and that's including a warm-up and cool down.

Jose Ramos, owner of Prime Performance Training Systems in Totowa, said his classes run 45 minutes to as long as an hour, but he said that includes what he calls "technique and mobility work," drills and 20 to 30 minutes for the actual kettlebell workout.

Kettlebells can range from 5 to 50 pounds and are sold at most sporting goods stores. Having them in your home allows you to do quick workouts.

They're also portable enough to take to a park if you're looking to take advantage of good weather.

"Once you know how to safely perform certain movements, it's endless what you can add in," Ramos said. …
