Christie Puts Aside Annoyance for Charity

HOBOKEN -- Governor Christie has sparred at times in the past year with the owners of the Jets and Giants, but he was all smiles Friday when he joined them at an event celebrating a National Football League charity effort.

Christie appeared with Jets owner Woody Johnson; Giants co- owners John Mara and Jonathan Tisch; NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and more than 100 children at Hoboken's Boys & Girls Club. The club features a new wood floor -- complete with Super Bowl XLVIII's logo - - paid for by the league's New York/New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee's Snowflake Foundation.

The committee and the league announced plans to spend $2 million to rebuild recreational spaces for children in the metropolitan area that, like the Hoboken club, were badly damaged by Sandy last fall.

Christie's recurring ire at the teams stems from their objections to attempts by the developer Triple Five to revive the American Dream Meadowlands shopping and entertainment project, which has been dormant since 2009.

The Jets and Giants filed suit in state Superior Court last summer, saying that Triple Five's addition of an indoor water and amusement park to its plan for the complex had triggered an option allowing the teams to veto it. The teams said that the new features would attract thousands of additional cars to the site per day, leading to a miserable game-day experience for their fans.

A Superior Court judge later dismissed most of the case as being "not ripe," while leaving the teams the option of refiling the lawsuit if the additions are approved by the board of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, the state agency overseeing the project.

'Anti-New Jersey'

At the time, Christie expressed his displeasure with the Giants and Jets for filing a lawsuit to try to prevent American Dream from being revived. …
