The idea had been in the back of Lou Lamoriello's mind for "a little while" before Sunday's NHL Draft at Prudential Center.

The Devils' general manager knew Anthony Brodeur, a goaltender and the 18-year-old son of his longtime franchise goaltender Martin Brodeur, potentially could be selected and thought it would be pretty special if his team was the one to do it. When the circumstances came together Sunday for Lamoriello to make that happen in the final round, he thought it was fitting the elder Brodeur make the announcement.

"When it came time and I had it so I could acquire a seventh- [round] pick [from Los Angeles], I called Marty about the sixth round," Lamoriello said Monday.

"Marty knew nothing about what we were thinking and what we were going to do. I never talked to him about it. I said we were probably going to take Anthony in the seventh, provided nobody took him before, and wanted to give him the option; I really encouraged him to come down and make the selection. …
