Mets Not Folding Tents

PITTSBURGH - Dillon Gee had a flight to catch, so he dressed, talked and made a beeline for the clubhouse door. Like most of his teammates, Gee was anxious for this four-day hiatus from baseball and the opportunity to shelve the first 91 games.

In broad brush strokes, his season has been a reflection of this 2013 Mets season. Both are weighed down by fragile moments; both feature stirring charges back toward respectability.

A month ago, Gee was 2-6. His ERA was 6.34. His spot in the starting rotation was hanging by a thread.

And then things turned.

On Sunday afternoon, Gee authored another impressive outing. He allowed just one run in 6 2/3 innings as the Mets held off the Pirates, 4-2, during their pre-All-Star-break finale at PNC Park to complete a 6-3 road trip.

Gee is 7-7 with a 4.32 ERA. The Mets are 41-50. Neither set of numbers possesses a glossy sheen - or a sheen of any kind, really - but each measures how far the Mets have climbed over this latest section of the season.

"It says a lot," Gee said. "All those guys, they work extremely hard every day. There's no giving up. They've been fighting ever since the first day. It wasn't going the way we wanted to for a while, but we've turned it around.

"To finish like that feels good."

The Mets pooled together three runs for Gee during the first inning. Marlon Byrd continued to carve his way through the season. His ground-rule double made it 1-0.

Then John Buck, previous owner of a simmering-hot bat in April, flashed some of that three-month-old magic. He drove a single to right field, bringing home Byrd and David Wright.

Buck's hit put the Mets on top, 3-0. With some help from his relievers - LaTroy Hawkins survived a two-on, no-out jam in the eighth; Bobby Parnell tossed a scoreless ninth - Gee pulled his win- loss record back to .500.
