PATERSON -- City police arrested 30 people on various charges -- including 22 that were drug-related -- during an overnight deployment of the Special Operations Unit, Director Glenn Brown said Sunday.

It was the most arrests made by the unit since Brown launched the Special Operations initiative in early spring. About 40 officers participated in the crackdown that ran from 4 p.m. Saturday until 4 a.m. Sunday in the 1st, 4th and 5th wards.

"Last night was an exceptionally busy night for us," Brown said. "Especially at this time of year, it's crucial that we shut down this illegal street activity."

Eleven of the arrests were for possession of drugs, and 11 others were for drug-related crimes like loitering in a drug area. Six were for outstanding warrants, one for aggravated assault on a police officer and another for resisting arrest.

Moreover, city police issued 414 summonses for moving violations and 19 for violating municipal ordinances regulating such behavior as excessive noise and public drinking. …
