Yankees Quiet at Deadline

Article excerpt

LOS ANGELES -- For better or worse, these are your New York Yankees.

After letting Wednesday's trade deadline expire without swinging a deal, general manager Brian Cashman pointed to the players in his clubhouse -- along with those coming off the disabled list -- as capable of reaching October.

"Once we get all these guys back, we certainly will be a team that can make a run at this thing," Cashman said shortly after the 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline passed.

Curtis Granderson is due to come off the DL for Friday's game. And Cashman still counts Alex Rodriguez as one of those returning players, despite the looming possibility of a lengthy suspension by MLB for his alleged connection to the Biogenesis steroids scandal.

On Wednesday, USA Today reported that the commissioner's office was prepared to levy a lifetime ban on the troubled slugger. ESPN's "Outside the Lines" later reported that Rodriguez's representatives and MLB were negotiating terms of a suspension.

"Hopefully, Alex will be back shortly thereafter," Cashman said after mentioning Granderson's expected arrival for the upcoming three-game series at San Diego. Cashman added that A-Rod's left quad and hip issues are in the past.

Rodriguez's representatives have promised a vigorous fight to any ban, though the commissioner's office might invoke its powers to impose a permanent suspension on "just cause" for a violation of the CBA -- taking A-Rod off the field at least until the appeal process is completed.

Cashman wouldn't speculate on any A-Rod outcome.

Rooted in the present, Cashman sees last week's acquisition of slugger Alfonso Soriano, the return of Derek Jeter and Granderson's expected arrival as essential parts of a realistic pennant chase. …
