SECAUCUS -- Firefighters from at least six municipalities battled a blaze that damaged eight units in the Harmon Cove condominium complex on Friday evening, authorities said.

The floor of a second-level unit collapsed into a first-floor apartment during the fire, which appeared to be under control by 8 p.m., said Mayor Michael Gonnelli, a former Secaucus fire chief who was among the volunteer firefighters at the scene.

No one was hurt and a dog was rescued, Gonnelli said. Several firefighters suffered heat exhaustion, he said. Most were treated at the scene, although one was taken to a hospital, he said.

The fire, which began before 6 p.m., damaged eight units on Teal Plaza, with at least six families displaced from their homes, Gonnelli said.

A resident of one of the units, Christian Cortez, 43, said he left his home at 4:45 p.m. to take his son to soccer practice. He said he received a call around 5:30 p.m. and was told that there was a fire at the complex. …
