WEST MILFORD -- Township officials are ready to revive a cleanup program at a decades-old municipal contamination site, using insurance coverage.

During last Wednesday's council meeting, Township Attorney Fred Semrau delivered a $13,391 insurance payment for expenditures associated with the cleanup of the former Department of Public Works depot off Banker Road. The coverage, discovered by the clerk's office last year after roughly 25 years of dormancy, should help the local government finally remediate the site and close the case file, he said.

"We have finally received compensation for what the township paid and a commitment going forward on that $50,000 expenditure for a significant portion of that, which I will be able to report when we have a contract," Semrau said.

The depot is on the state Department of Environmental Protection's list of active contamination sites. It was responsible for the impairment of 33 residential wells in the Upper Greenwood Lake community roughly 25 years ago. …
