Wood-Ridge Cuts the Ribbon on 'Awesome' Middle School

WOOD-RIDGE -- For fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders in the district, the new school year began Tuesday in a new school in a new location.

The newly created Wood-Ridge Intermediate School moved into the 17-classroom building at 151 First St. that once housed Our Lady of Assumption School, a private Catholic school that closed in 2010.

The borough acquired the property in June 2012, and renovated and remodeled it in preparation for this school year.

"It's beyond our imagination of where it could be on opening day," Principal Robert Recchione said. "Kids are excited. They're very proud to be part of our new building."

Borough officials created the new 280-student school to "prevent overcrowding in our two [other] schools," Recchione said. Catherine E. Doyle Elementary School is now K-3; Wood-Ridge Junior-Senior High School serves Grades 7 through 12.

Borough officials -- including the mayor and members of the council and the Board of Education -- attended the school's ribbon- cutting ceremony in the morning, along with parents and students, who were then given a quick tour. …
